Bear Good Fruit

At IV's Fall Conference, students were encouraged by Jesus' words in John 15 to bear good fruit!  Inspired by the testimonies of Christians throughout history, UO students walked away realizing that proclaiming Jesus changes the world.

Huston has been searching for people on this campus to join him in his fight against child sex trafficking. He came to the Fall Conference and became convinced that IV students and staff were serious about pushing back the darkness in this world. He didn't just find a Christian community - he found a group of students who are determined to raise the cry on the UO campus for those who are locked in slavery and have no voice.

Huston's dream is to inspire other students to give their lives to Jesus and to pushing back the darkness of oppression in our world today.

Welcome to the first edition of the University of Oregon alumni newsletter.  The purpose of the newsletter is to create a regular forum for InterVarsity Alumni to reconnect with each other and the current fellowship.  I hope you'll enjoy hearing about what God is doing on campus and in the lives of alumni.  I also hope you'll be encouraged to contribute an update for yourself on our northwest alumni website ivcfalumni.org.

Sincerely,
Aubrie Stent, Alumni Coordinator

Normal Ministry-What's That?

One leisurely Saturday morning I get a desperate phone call from a student leader, Tiana, who plays for the UO women's Club soccer team.  They had a game in 15 minutes against Reed College and they forgot to arrange for a referee.  Could I do it?  Never mind that I haven't played soccer in 5 years, let alone ever refereed a game.  Sure!  It was a great opportunity to enter into Tiana's world and see the people she is influencing.

Each week, I'm finding that "normal ministry" doesn't exist.  Life does not happen in Bible studies and large group.  These things are great tools, but people's lives are touched in the day to day context of living and interacting together.

joelThere is one thing that God keeps pushing on my heart that is needed in this ministry and that is prayer.  I felt like God said to me, "Joel, if there is only one thing you can do this year, let it be this: Pray that students would develop a love for and a deep desire to pray for the University of Oregon and their fellow students."

Dave & Family

David Dillon (class of 1991) looks back on his involvement with IV as being one of the most significant things in his spiritual life.  Being around peers who took their faith seriously, he was taught to think, lead, and study the Bible.  Because he loved it so much, David joined staff soon after graduation.  He couldn't think of anything he would rather do than work with college students regarding their spiritual journey.  Leaving staff in '96, David became a missionary in China leading a small mission's organization called China Partners (china-partners.org).  Many of China Partners' values reflect are those instilled in him when he was discipled and involved in IV.

In 2002, David married "an incredible lady" named Joy who is from South Africa.  They have two children, Samuel and Anna.

Every place David has lived he has found a lack of leaders and he is passionate about getting to help raise them up.  David says, "I think my favorite thing about my job now is helping to form leaders passionate about serving the Chinese church."

Trevor Davies (class of 1999) had a desire to serve the Lord by working with college students and impoverished communities.  After graduation, Trevor came on staff with InterVarsity.  Interested in changing the desperate conditions of the poor and homeless and transforming college students to become leaders of change, Trevor led the Portland Urban Project during the summers.  While on staff at OSU Trevor met his wife Chrissy, also an IV staff member.  Last year, their family expanded to include their baby girl-Keira.

Hearing God's call on their lives to reach the poor beyond the USA, the Davies have joined Servant Partners and will begin working in South Africa this summer.  Working with Servant Partners, their mission is to live with the poor in order to train leadership and build a church in the slums.  In turn, they seek to help churches change communities by training local leadership in taking responsibility for their community as a whole.  Pray for Trevor and Chrissy as they follow God's calling to South Africa.
